The Portland Youth Football League located in Portland, Tennessee was formed in 1999 to give the children of Portland and the surrounding communities an opportunity to learn, experience and enjoy football and cheerleading. PYFL is governed by the Middle Tennessee Junior Youth Football League.
PYFL offers football and cheerleading to children ages six to twelve. These programs are primarily educational; however, our league does have a competitive side which includes play-off games as well as a Super Bowl. Our coaches teach fundamental skills and techniques to ensure safety and proper player development. They also teach players to play the game fairly, as a team, and in a sportsman-like manner. Our coaches will also instill a winning spirit but at the same time teach the children that doing one’s best is more important than winning, so that they will never feel defeated by the outcome of a game or his/her performance. All football coaches in PYFL will participate in a coaching clinic.
The cheer program teaches fundamental skills, proper cheer technique, and basic gymnastics to ensure safety and proper cheerleader development. We strive to provide a safe, positive environment for all the children and their families and to demonstrate, emphasize and teach good sportsmanship and team work.
Members of PYFL are challenged with not only creating a premier youth football and cheer program in Middle Tennessee, but to always put the children first in all decisions. We feel that by making the experience as fun as it can be, that the child will grow not only on the field but also at home, in school and in the community. We feel that it is our responsibility to prepare these children for the next level of play or cheer, whether in PYFL, the Middle School or High School program. Youth football is meant to be a time that the whole family can come and enjoy watching a family member play or cheer. We hope that between the partnership of PYFL and the Portland Parks and Recreation Department, along with several area businesses, we can provide the children of Portland a premier youth football and cheerleading program.
